The mind-body relationship is in every way difficult to handle. It’s different how people look at it, and that makes it even harder to deal with. The mind-body relationship is hard to explain, which might be the reason for all the various statements. In the four texts that we read in this assignment we hear about the way that our mind and body is attached to each other. The first text, A New Fertility Factor, is an article by Alice D. Domar. This text is a very good example on the explanation that says that the body depends on the mind. The article is about Melissa who wants to get pregnant. She has tried every option, but nothing works. She was sad about it and thought she was the only one with that problem. When she joins the 10-week mind-body program, she realizes that she not the only person who’s dealing with such a problem. Melissa gets better, and feels less stressed. Five weeks later she finds out that she is pregnant. Through this article it appears that the way our body “acts” depends on our state of mind. Melissa starts out being sad and stressed, but 10 weeks later - after the 10-weeks mind-body program – she feels better and gets pregnant. As we hear in text 3 by Steven Pinker our knowledge is that it is the earth’s rotation that turns away from the sun, but even though we know that, we still get the impression that the sun sets. Unlike decades ago we now know a lot more about how the world really is. This makes us aware of that we can’t find salvation in religious powers; this makes us search for salvation somewhere else. This is where the mind-body programs become a big part of our lives. As we can read in the texts, these programs help to reduce stress and in many ways improve the quality of life. In the text “We all need a dose of the doctor” by Michael C. Miller we can read that he means that we nowadays think more about getting healthy by means of medication, even though we can treat it with something else. He says that we can treat such diseases as depression with having a good patient-doctor relationship instead of using medicine. We now even have medicine to treat mental diseases. As Steven Pinker says; with antidepressant and anti-anxiety drugs so common, critics wonder whether we’re losing the ability to overcome problems through force of will. With this he means that we’re becoming more unable to solve our problems without any use of drugs.
