Opgaven diskuterer, hvordan ydre trusler og et stigende behov for sikkerhed ændrer både individers adfærd og det fysiske landskab. People think that when they live in a utopian society, they wouldn’t fear as much as those who lives in a dystopian society. That’s not always the case, and that’s what Gordimer proves in her short story “once a upon a time” .

Already from the beginning in the story, it went from an Utopian environment to a Dystopian environment. It changes because of the fear steps in the story. Their need to protect themselves gets bigger and bigger.

- In this quote we see how the environment changes from the beginning.

On page 1. - line 7

“ A voice in the echo-chamber of the subconscious?

A sound.

A creaking of the kind made by the weight carried by one foot after another along a wooden floor. I listened. I felt the apertures of my ears distend with concentration. Again: the creaking.”

- This quote opens a kind of fear in whole the body and that's not only for the person in the story but also for the reader. The fear is not shown a lot at this point in this quote but later on the fear will be the only thing left in the story.

- In this next quote we see more fear, and how the dystopian and uncanny society looks like.
