“Popular girls” is a fiction short story written by Karen Shepard in 2001. The story is about five “popular” girls and their descriptions of the upper class teenage life in New York City and their fascination for the adult life and its involvements. We follow Kaethe, Alina, CJ, Sydney and Stephanie and their view on an everyday life for a popular girl in school, in the city and the nights out. They drink, do drugs and go out with the older boys, in an age of only 15 to 16 years. They try to get attention from their absent parents and the outside world in general. With this short story Karen portrays the typical “popular girls” and search for reasons for their outrageous behavior. The story takes place in 1982, but is written with a more modern angle.
The title “popular girls” introduces the theme. It indicates that the telling is based on these exaggerated girls. It gives an impression that this is a high class story which portrays elements of the life in New York City, and the life of disturbed girls. The girls have a twisted self-perception and the golds in life in general. “You can’t get enough of us. You’ve seen girls like us every step of the way through school. We’re way out of your league.” Here is just one example on the way the narrator describes the girls. They are way over the ordinary people but still there are clues in the text where you can doubt the reliability of these girls life, but that will be clarified later.
