The story is written from a 3 person perspective. And that gives us a better look at the whole family. Burt has two children, Jack and Terri. Vera is the mother. Burt and Vera are divorced.

A Serious Talk is a story of two normal human’s relationship being over. Ending a relationship can be hard for some, the feeling wanted by that other person is just too hard to handle. When jealousy plays a big part like anger does it can be heated sometimes. And it can even be harder when you got kids together

The story begins as Burt pulls over to Vera's home. This is on the night before Christmas when Burt came with gifts to the family. The next day Burt came before 6 a clock because he was told by Vera.

"liked it where he was. He liked it in front of the fireplace, a glass in his hand, his house, his home". Burt then walks in front of the fireplace and throws some sawdust logs in it and darts for the patio door. When you drink a bit, you can have mixed emotions and make some actions that you don’t mean too. And that is what Burt did at that moment.
