The short story The Shining Mountain is about the Scottish girl named Pangma-La and her father. Her father is a professional mountaineer and is very famous, so Pangma-La tries to impress him and live up to his expectations. When she is old enough, her father takes Pangma-La to the mountain she is named after, to climb to the top.
Pangma-La is having difficulties and an old Sherpa woman appears offering her help. At the start Pangma-La are afraid to disappoint her father and continues even if it is injuring her. After some time have past Pangma-La agrees to let the old lady help her with her issues. After four difficult days on the mountain, Pangma-La feels so sick and her heart feels so heavy, that she gives it to the Sherpa woman to carry.
When her father reach the top of the mountain, Pangma-La has disappeared because the old lady have turned her into a swan. She claims that the girl belongs to her now because the father has neglected his daughter and her needs. The old woman turns out to be the mountain goddess and tells the father that now he has to live and carry his daughter’s heavy burden and heart
