Analyse af 'The Shining Mountain'

The time setting of “The Shining Mountain” is difficult to determine, as it is meant to resemble a fairy tale, there is no specific time period mentioned in the text. As is typical of most fairy tales, the Shining Mountain begins with the sentence “once there was” (p. 18, l. 1), thus removing the

importance of a specific time setting.

However, it is evident that the story takes place in modern times, as the main character

(Pangma-La) comes home from school and watches the news on TV. “She would come home

from an ordinary school day and there he would be on the BBC news” (p. 18, l. 10-13).

The original setting of the story is Pangma-La’s family home. The story states that, “she would come home from an ordinary school day and there he would be on BBC news, planting the Union Jack on a far, far mountain peak” (p. 18, l. 10-13). The reference to the Union Jack indicates that their home resides in Scotland (p. 18, l. 7). It is, however, made clear that their home is far from the mountains due to the fact they have to travel on a plane to reach The Shining Mountain, which is where most of the story is set.
