We’ve currently been living in the states for three months, and we’ve been asked by the editor of the school paper to write an essay about the gun law in America with Danish eyes, a law which was written over two hundred years ago. We will bring in different aspects and factors, which weighs a lot in this debate. We will try to come up with a conclusion on whether it’s possible to restrict the gun law or not.
There is no doubt that guns are a huge factor in America. The law that makes it possible to own a firearm, has been heavily discussed after massive incidents. The columbine shooting in particular, made some Americans wonder if guns are a good idea, because it upset all of America. The most shocking experience so far is that it is possible to join a gun club at the schools, and moreover that the Americans see guns as a sign of freedom, when it only brings more violence. People should be allowed to defend themselves, but it shouldn’t be so easy to shoot people. They could make it illegal to own a gun, but that would not be possible because they feel free when owning a gun. A while ago in Texas it was legal to shoot people for trespassing, and it was legal in several states. If they made it illegal to own a weapon, it still wouldn’t be hard to gain access to a weapon.
