New York is a city where many black people have had their homes throughout hundred years. There are big parts of the town where black people live their own life isolated from the white man’s world. Black people have lawfully the same rights as white people, but that does not mean that they are treated as a white man would be. We know that there still exists racism in USA and that many black people are treated awful because of their darker skin colour. Frequently we hear about a people getting shot because some small crime they did. You could say that black people are not seen as other human are seen. In Ralph Waldo Ellison’s story “Invisible Man” this is also the case. In the story the protagonist and narrator is described as an invisible man.

He calls himself invisible as white people do not see him as a three-dimensional person of flesh and blood but as someone without importance. The invisible man is a black man living in Harlem, New York and the prologue takes place there also.
