The purpose of assignment 3.1 is for you to practice writing an essay and analyzing a Postmodern short story, focusing specifically on its Postmodern characteristics.

And draw parallels between the Postmodern theme of LOSS - of identity or of values. In other words - how do you detect the conflict between chaos/order; meaning/meaninglessness in the two characters? Remember to use quotes to support your claims.

“Baglady” by A.S.Byatt. And they are not your husband by Raymond Carver.

The writer shows us how important appearance is to the people and what happens to a person when someone tries to change them/her (Daphne) and put her in a situation in which she doesn’t feel comfortable. For example, (p.9,3.1-3) ``You don’t want me on this trip, ´ she to Rollo when told about it. ´I'd better stay and mind the donkeys and the geese and the fantails as usual…" which indicates the protagonist is not excited about the trip, but we see that she still tries to make an effort (p.9,3.7-10) “she has tried to make herself attractive for this jaunt and has lost ten pounds and had hands manicured: but now she sees the other ladies, she knows it is not enough......” She tried to change herself so as to impress the other wives, but all in vain. Instead has feels insecure, an outsider and inferior compared to the other women.
