Fear is what drives the human mind. In moderate size, it will make the host of the feeling more creative and therefore more openminded to change, if only one lets it do so. Eddie is no difference. He is forced to choose between staying in his comfort zone or to stop hiding his feelings and start acting on them.
Lezanne Clannachans short story takes place at the Waterloo railway station in London. We find Eddie at this location because he has been in London to find a birthday present for his mother. Eddie is rarely outside because he must take care of his mother. This is his first time in London and […] the space makes him dizzy. (p. 1, l. 2). It is Thursday, he ditched school to get there. On the railway station Eddie encounter a homeless man with a dog and later a woman who is worried for him. Even though Eddie was supposed to be home early to care for his mother, he stays at the railway station until […] they hear the last train approaching… …Angie tries to pull him to his feet. (p. 5, l. 164) but he stays behind.
Angie comes in to the story at a time where Eddie wants nothing else than to get home as soon as possible. Her face is covered in a little too much make up, reminding Eddie of his mother. Over her mouth, Angie have a piercing decorated with a diamond. She is a young mother of two, who currently are at her parents’ place, as she works overtime on Thursdays. When Angie and Eddie first encounter on another, she seems somehow attracted towards Eddie, but not soon after it is more of a motherly concern that keeps her from leaving him alone. She tells Eddie of her brother, Jamie, who ran away for some days and came back as a changed person. Just as Eddie changes throughout the short story.
