Analyse af 'Monster under the Bed'

The short story is about a 15-year old guy whose name is Eddie. The story begins with Eddie sitting on a bench at Waterloo train station, waiting for the next train to arrive. A homeless man comes by with his dog. The dogs run up to Eddie but is told off by the homeless man, who gets very angry. After that, we meet the character Angie, who tries to start a conversation with Eddie. The conversation quickly turns into a talk about Eddie's mom, who plays a huge part in his life. But throughout the story, we quickly discover that, it’s not a good thing because Eddie's mum suffers from agoraphobia (fear of going outside) and depression. He compares the sickness to a story his mom told him when he was little, about the Monster under the bed. The sickness causes Eddie to stay home because he needs to take care of her since Eddie’s dad left when she got sick. The anxiety and fear of Eddie leaving his mom or loving someone more than her, resulting in Eddie having to tie his own dog to a tree in the forest and leave it be.

The story is set in London Waterloo train station in and throughout the story this is also where the story takes place. The setting plays an important part in the plot of the story. As the story progresses it gets quiet and dark and the story becomes more intense because Eddie's feelings are getting clearer. In the beginning, the train station is like an escape for Eddie, almost like he's free. But as it gets darker, he remembers that in the end, he has to go home to his sick mother. There’s also used a lot of imagery (ll. 8.) to set the mood and makes it easier to imagine.
