Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was a former South African President and was one of the country's leading anti-apartheid activists.
The apartheid means separation between the blacks and the whites. Separation - is the direct translation of the word apartheid from the Afrikaans language. Apartheid was the white South African Government's repressive policy, which means that they should be kept physically separated. The whites had all privileges, and the black and coloured was discriminated against them.
Nelson Mandela was born in 1918 as Rolihlahla. But at school and around the white people, he was called Nelson. And he died in 2013.
I will put the apartheid with the ANC. The ANC was the only organization fighting for the black people’s rights. So, Nelson became a member and joined the youth league. The ANC wanted to achieve full citizenship for all south Africans through nonviolent methods. Nelson Mandela helped through a campaign where he traveled across the country protesting against the discrimination.
Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his first years in prison on Robben Island, he spent the years in a small cell with inhumane punishments both to him and other activists. He was still working on trying to gain freedom for the black people, so he smuggled out political statements and a part of his autobiography “Long walk to freedom” was about his fight for freedom, he smuggled it out so everyone could read about how life was.
