Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born 18 July 1918 in Transkei, South Africa.
He was the first to be elected in a real democratic election.
He was South Africa’s first black president between 1994 and 1999.
Before his presidency, Mandela was an anti-apartheid activist, and the leader of the African National Congress's.
The South African courts convicted Mandela on different charges while he led the movement against apartheid.
In accordance with his conviction, Mandela was in prison in 27 years, spending many of these years on Robben Island which is a popular historic place for tourists to visit in South Africa.

Even though Mandela is out of prison he still continues to voice his opinion on topical issues such as racism.
In South Africa he is often known as Madiba, an honorary title adopted by elders of Mandela's clan. The title has come to be synonymous with Nelson Mandela.
Since the end of apartheid, many people have praised Mandela, including former supporters of the apartheid regime.
Mandela has received more than one hundred awards, most notably the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993
Mandela’s father was a Thembu royalty therefore Mandela had access to the best education a black person could have.
