elson Mandela was born 18th Of July 1918 in a chieftain family in the Tembu tribe. Born Rolihlahla he was given his English name Nelson by a teacher at his school.As young Nelson was chosen for both an arranged marriage and a career as the chief advisor, but he fled from both and determined to become a lawyer in Johannesburg. Together with his friend Oliver Tambo, they opened the first black lawyer firm in South Africa. In 1942, Nelson become member of ANC and later together with Walter Sisulu, Oliver Tambo, William Nkomo and Anton Lembede formed Nelson Mandela the ANC young league which goal was to reshape the ANC.The Organization fight against apartheid the system devised by the all-white National Party, which oppressed the black majority.
However, even though the prisons were overcrowded, and the country was marked by riots, the authorities would not negotiate with the ANC. Instead, Mandela along with 155 other activists, indicted for treason in the period 1956 to 1961. The trial was called "The Treason Trial.
In 1958 Nelson married Winnie Madikizela. It was Nelsons second marriage.
However after the Sharpeville massacre when 69 black people were shot dead by the police, the ANC was declared illegal in 1960 and Nelson Mandela went underground. At that point, Nelson believed that the ANC had no alternative that result to use of violence. Therefore they founded the underground army, Umkhonto we Sizwe who sabotage the country’s economy.After 17 months hiding, he was arrested and charged with sabotage and attempting to violently overthrow the government and sent 5 years to prison.He faced another trial in winter of 1964 and was sentenced to life in prison.
