Oftentimes individuals desire to pursue a certain education just because it will eventually lead to a career opportunity that will bring them high financial return in the long run, or is overall perceived as very popular or prestigious among their pears. From the text it becomes evident that Adam’s understanding of success means having money, therefore despite his love for chemistry and science, he decides to pursue a degree in economics, which will ultimately result in a better-paid job position.
