I am Michael is a true store about a man named Michael Glatze. Michael was a gay activist living in San Francisco. He and a couple of his friends were the creators of a magazine for gay youth called the XY magazine. After living in San Francisco with his boyfriend, Bennet, they moved to Canada because Bennet was given a job in San Francisco.
The main character Michael Glatze is played by James Franco and I think he does an amazing job at vividly expressing the emotional time Michael had been going through. Michaels boyfriend Bennet is played by Zachary Quinto and Bennet is also a gay activist.
In his magazines, Michael made articles on his thoughts about the gay community and how the world views gay culture. He wanted everyone to embrace their sexuality and come out, but he also wanted everyone to understand that a label doesn’t define you. Many young gay men looked up to Michael.
This film is based on an article written by Benoit Lewis. Benoit worked with Michael at the XY Magazine and knew him well. Michael Glatze was involved with the movie as well.
Michael went through a tough period where he went from one extreme to the other after renouncing his past life. He went from being a gay activist, who hated Christian fundamentalist to becoming a Christian fundamentalist. After Michael feared that he had inherited a deadly disease from his dad, he obsessively questioned where he would go after he’d die.
