The coronation of Bruce was dramatic: He murdered his rival, “the Red Comyn”, in the church of Dumfries and rode as fast as he could to take over the Crown. Comyn was one of the vassal that King Edward installed in his attempt to make Scotland English territory, and the murder was a part of the Scottish fight for freedom, which started under Sir William Wallace.

Wallace beat the well-trained English troops at Stirling Bridge, and the same did Bruce 17 years later at Bannockburn. In both battles the English troops/army were much greater then the troops/army the Scottish could muster, even though they dreaded archers it was to be England’s trump card in the hundred-year war in France. ?????

Wallace was unfortunately betrayed by his own men and didn’t survive the fight for freedom, but Bruce and James Douglas survived. The two national heroes continued stubbornly their fight, until Edward III 14 years after Bannockburn gave up to claim Scottish territory and Bruce was recognized as Scotland’s lawful King
