The short story Crossing is written by Mark Slouka, and was published back in 2009. The story shows the relationship between father and son, but also the feeling of the way you sometimes balance between past and future, fear and uncertainty is something there appears a lot in the story.
In addition to interpret the plot of the story, I will include a summary of the text; discuss the conflicts in the story, the setting of the story, the literary writing style, the meaning of the title and the morale of the story.
In the story, we are introduced to a father, who is in a difficult period of life. After a hard divorce which has been painful for everybody in the little family, the father will give his son an experience he can’t get with his mother. The father takes his son on a real “man trip” to a remote area, which he remembers from his own childhood. He carries their backpacks across a river, and then he goes back and helps his son across. The father and son spend the night in the wild nature like real men. The next day when they have to cross the river again, the river is much stronger than the day before. When he help his son over the river again, lose the father his footing and moves some feet downstream to a point, that makes it seem impossible to move forward or backward. The story ends with the father, who stands in the middle of the wild river, and tries to convince his son that they are o.k. and they just have to “hang on”.
