The Tale Of One Bad Rat is a graphic novel written by Bryan Talbot. The graphic novel was published in 1994, and the British writer Beatrix Potter, who wrote children books plays a huge part of this graphic novel. The novel is divided into three chapters – town, road and country.
In the novel we follow the young girl Helen, who is trying to get her life back on track after being sexual abused by her father when she was younger. In the novel we follow how she tries to get rid of her inner demons, how she tries to confront her past and through the whole story we see how she develops from being this young, enclosed girl to this now beautiful, strong, independent woman. Through Helens childhood her father had been sexually abusing her and Helen had allowed him to do it, because she thought that it was her way of showing him love (p. 38). Helens mother was hostile and told her several times that she didn’t love her or cared for her (p. 29). As we can conclude Helen did not have the most loving and stabile childhood. Mostly is had been traumatic and scared her for life.
