The title” Live Like a dog, Alone” describes the cap driver’s life situation he has in a strange country. The cap driver is a refugee who has not got everything he wants in the strange country and what he needs is a lady who can share his life with him. Therefore, you can compare him with a street dog without owner, love and care. Because he is a cap driver and drive around all the time, can also be a way to show that he is searching something. The title also describes Miriam’s situation in the other way. Because of her busy time, she does not think of her loneliness. The only feature where she sees her loneliness is, when the doctors on the hospital are restarting her heart, after she has had a heart attack. In the end of the story the cap driver mentions this little weakness of her, and Miriam realizes that she is alone and admits it to the cap driver. Normally dogs are searching for love and care and that is what they both do and because they have something in common with namely the loneliness, they find each other at least.
Discuss the ending: At the start of the story we find out that Miriam is a person, who always takes care of other people. She thinks she has to do everybody happy and therefore she forgets herself. In the ending we see that she change herself, now she begins to think about herself. She realizes that she is alone and need some love and care by other and that is why she invites the cap driver in for a cup of coffee and maybe some more. But on the other hand this inviting is not only based on her loneliness. She also wants to know if her prognoses would come true, so she is curious. “She would ask him in, there would be sex, they would end up married, thus he would stop being an illegal and get citizenship. He would use her capital up and turn himself into an arms dealer or some such and then run off with a girl from his own country of his age.”(p.11, l. 124-127)
