The book is about a girl named Jessminder Bhamra, but her friends just call her Jess.

She lives with her parents and her sister Pinky. They are immigrants and very religious.Jess doesn't really fit in to the family. She loves football and David Beckham, and that is not an Indian tradition. Her mom tells her that she cannot be running around playing football like a boy and show her legs. But Jess chooses to bend the rules, and she starts playing football at the park with her best friend Tony, and his friends. Here Jess meets a girl called Jules. Jules plays for a girl football team, and she immediately notices Jess' talent. Jules gets Jess into the team, and Jess loves it. But her parents still won't let her play. They want her to go to college, learn to cook a traditional Indian dinner, and settle down with a nice Indian boy. But Jess continues to play football, and she also starts to develop feelings for Joe, the coach.

Because of Jess’ and Jules’ skills, the team goes through all the way to the semi-finals.

Unfortunately, the semi-finals are played on the day of her sister’s wedding, but to Jess’ big surprise her father sees how sad she is, and allows her to go to play.
