You are an environmentalist who has been asked to give a speech at a conservationist “Friends of the Earth” meeting. Your topic is the ways in which man is interfering with and destroying the environment. Write the opening of your speech (600 words).
Audience, what I’m going to read you, comes dear from my heart.
It’s a letter. I wrote it for my unborn grandchildren. Please pay attention.
Dear future grandchildren. I’m so sorry.
I think I speak for all of us when I say I’m sorry. I’m sorry that we left you this mess of a planet. Most of us didn’t even care about the future and we listened to people who made excuses. I hope that we haven’t poisoned the oceans so much that you can't swim in them or turned the Amazon rain forest into a desert. Our generation has been so caught up in our own doings to do something about it. We have used nature as a credit card with a no spending limit, but we soon realized we couldn’t eat money. It is like a marriage gone wrong, ?we didn't know what we had until it was gone.
Denmark was once said to be “the happiest country in the world”. But at the same time we had the biggest consumption of antidepressants… It feels like we can’t live with each other, but we can’t live with ourselves either so everyone’s medicated. Perhaps it has something to do with how society has taught us to be, who to become; but we are society.
