Loosing a child is without a doubt the worst possible thing parents can imagine. If someone is in a situation, where they have lost a child, we feel sorry for them, but we do not always fear the situation, because we have a tendency to say that it will never happen to us, but it can, it can happen to anybody. When an accident of this kind happens, it is hard to say how the person involved in the accident as well as the family members will react. Every person reacts in their own way. Some people are in shock, and do not realize how serious the accident really is, while others break down and let their feelings out in the open. This situation is shown in the short story A Small Good Thing, where a couple looses their son, Scotty. The mother is extremely worried about her son, and goes as far as to blame herself for his sleeping condition. She thinks he will not wake up, as long as she is sitting by his hospital bed. The father on the other hand is being surprisingly calm. It seems like he is not touched by the accident, but it is only because he is keeping a strong façade. On the inside he is just as afraid as the mother.
