Summary
The short story “Such Small Islands” by Lauren Groff is about a young girl named Aura, who spends the summer at a house by the beach with her half-sister Gus. Aura’s mother is often away because of work, so Gus takes care of her. At first Aura likes Gus a lot, and they become very close. They spend time together and Aura feels safe with her. But later Gus starts spending more time with a boy named Oz. Aura begins to feel left out and jealous. The relationship between Aura and Gus changes, and Aura feels more alone. In the end, something bad happens at the beach, and Aura hides instead of helping. The story shows how strong feelings like jealousy can affect a child.
