Julia Gray’s short story” People-Watching” is about two people, and is taking place in an artist stools on Paddington Station in London. The two head characters are called Paul as the man and Kajsa as the woman, and they’re both in the middle of a school project, for the art-class at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. Throughout the story, we get flashbacks from Paul. The flashbacks are about him remembering being on this particular station, and most likely from his childhood. The flashbacks tell us about of a little girl called “Turtle”, and as the story continues does it become clear that this girl is Paul’s sister, is dead.

Symbolic
In the short story “people-watching, has a symbolic role, expect from the story’s meaning. Paul and Kajsa are on a specific assignment to watch and draw people on the street. The grammar begins this compound word acts as a symbolic trigger of one of the main character Paul’s memories towards his dead sister, which happens to be on the same station that Paul and Kajsa currently is. This I why this activity possible can be interpreted differently according to each of the characters. There are different reactions of this activity, for Kajsa is it a regular normal activity. For Paul is it a haunting activity because of his memories of his sister’s death, when he is spectating the people in the streets, he constantly gets images of the people dead, because of his sister’s death.
