Racism in 'To Kill a Mockingbird'

Racism is a very big problem that we cannot avoid, it has always existed in America.

From the time the first immigrants (Europeans) came to the country and killed the Native Americans for their land. The type of racism in this book is the racism against black people.

As it was covered earlier America divided itself into whites and blacks.

Many colored people were thought of as less than their peers. Whites were considered better than African Americans were, and almost every white person accepted the unjust judgment.

Racial discrimination hit hard in the south. Many of the characters in To Kill a Mockingbird were impacted by racial discrimination, including Calpurnia, Scout, and Tom Robinson and his family.

The racism in To Kill a Mockingbird is clear and is presented as the natural way of Maycomb.

The “usual disease” as Atticus puts it (p.98) . It is clear in the way that the blacks live together on the outskirts of the town. While the whites live closer to the center of the town.

There are prejudice against the black in the town and it become evident during Tom Robinson’s trial. Racism is not discussed before the trial. But afterwards the prejudice the white community holds against the black community becomes clear.
