Summary
The short story “The Flowers” by Alice Walker follows Myop, a ten-year old country girl who is enjoying the last days of summer. The story starts off with the first two paragraphs giving visuals of pastoral beauty, nature in its finest moment. Thereafter she strolls off into the woods for picking up blue flowers. In a cove, she accidentally steps over a long-dead man, her heel getting stuck in his face. Close to the corpse, there is a beautiful rose she picks up only to also discover a rotting noose, used for hanging people, as well as the braches of an old rotting oak. The girl puts down her flowers and the summer ends.
Characterize the girl Myop
The girl is called Myop (myopic=nærsynet). The girl Myop’s a 10 years old girl that lives at what I would presume is a farm because of the animals that surrounds her on a daily basis. There are never given further “specific” information about her but we can still tell a lot about her based on her behavior in the story. Something that I really think shines through in the story is her unawareness of things happening around her. A hint in the story that also would kind of suggest the same thing, would be the last paragraph of the story, where Myop picks up a pink flower that symbolizes innocence and playfulness which you compare with Myop. If we also look at her name, then it would also make even more sense why she is called Myop in the first place. She is near-sighted. She doesn’t see the things that is happening around her. She is just an innocent little girl. And that is why the summer ended, her world, her paradise collapsed at last when she saw the truth (the dead body) of what was happening around her all along.
