Analyse af Alice Walkers novelle 'The Flowers'

The novel is about a little girl called, Myop. She is ten years old and lives in a sharecropper with her family. It is located near a farm, and she often go by the pigpen and hen house. One day she is walking around in the woods, when she suddenly gets to a place she is not familiar with. She began to walk home, when she suddenly steps on a dead man’s face. Near the dead man Myop sees a pink rose she likes, while picking it up she sees a rotten noose, and a bit of shredding plowline, some of it hanging from a limb. Myop laid down the flowers. And the summer ends.

Narrator

The narrator has access to Myops mind, the narrator can tell if she is happy or how she feels and what her thoughts are. Page 107 line 19 “She had explored the woods behind the house many times” When she walks out into the woods the narrator always knows what she thinks and how she will react

Point of view

We see the story form Myops point of view, which can be seen from following example: “She was ten and nothing existed for her but her song, the stick clutched in her dark brown hand.” (Page 107, line 9) and “The harvesting of the corn and cotton, peanuts and squash made each day a golden surprise that caused excited little tremors to run up her jaws” (Page 107, line 3) in the first example the says that only playing and singing is in her interest, in the second example she says that she enjoy when the harvest season starts, because of the atmosphere and the smell.
