However, when a blooming mood grows, it can readily deteriorate. “Nothing existed for her but the song” (p.1, l.14) - Myop sings as the voyage begins. This demonstrates her naivety. Her name stands for “Myopia”. Myopia is the quality of being short-sighted. This makes perfect sense, because as a young child, you have a lack of intellectual insight that causes you to be oblivious to your surroundings.

Her loss of innocence in such a fast interval tells me that she was living in the present without any doubt. That is also what this phrase says, “Today she made her own path, bouncing this way and that way” (p.1, ll.30-31). In life, we mostly have the freedom to choose our own paths. Myop’s path leads her straight to the dreadful moment. When she steps on the decaying skull of the dead man and lodges her foot in it, she is in a literal sense and symbolically forced to confront the history behind her time of her ancestors. I think the man was lynched because of his skin colour and looking at the surroundings and Myop’s occupation they share skin colour. At an age like hers, you are often ineffectual of seeing the things slavery provoke and cause because it’s such an abstract concept, but at that moment, she faced the rough reality. The last line “And the summer was over” (p.2 l.75) was the line I personally felt the hardest. Summer is for a child combined with a lot of fun and enjoying time with your friends, but her mind is now completely consumed by a picture of a man’s decomposing skull. In addition, must the latest revelation of her ancestors and the injustices they faced be shocking. When you are used to being in a safe, protected world of childhood and afterwards being revealed to the evils of the world, everything turns upside down. What you had believed to be authenticity, nonfiction, or the complete truth is no longer reality. Her life is getting reshaped by this situation, and she will not be able to evolve or expand without it all ingrained in her. But in the end, we all have a choice, and she does as well, or so existentialism says. She can either take advantage of this opportunity by using it to strengthen her personality and live life to the fullest, or she can be terrified of the world and everything it has to offer.
