James Joyce, is one the most revered writers in the English language, an essential figure, in the history of the novel. He is although still hugely important to us, because of his devotion to some crucial themes. His determination of what actually goes on through are heads, moment, by moment has lead us to what we now know, as the stream of consciousness. And also, his determination to what language really sounds like inside of our minds. Born on the 2 February 1882, James spent the first 20 years of his life in and around Dublin.
James Joyce has written a bunch of books, but what they all shared in common, was that they were all about Dublin, a city which he loved and hated at the same time. Ireland at the time, was under the British crown, and as his father, James Joyce was a supporter of Irish Independence. At an early age James, revealed his talent at foreign languages. Which is also why his life after the 20 years in Dublin, was spent in and around Europe. Then, in 1904 he met a young woman, named Nora Barnacle, who was uneducated. After a few months together, Nora agreed to follow James to Europe, free from the morality of the Catholic church, and the British Empire. They then landed in Trieste, an Austrian-Hungarian port town. There, they raised two children, both given Italian names. There, Joyce became a language teacher.
