This essay will focus on the characterizations and the relationship between Ursula and Matt, because that is the most important issue in the novel.
The story is about the two main characters, the teenagers Ursula Riggs and Matt Donaghy, who are both sixteen years old and are students at Rocky River High.
Ursula Riggs aka. Ugly Girl is a very boy-like girl. Her body is big and not very girly, and she is good at almost every sport, mostly the contact sports. She is captain of the girl basketball team, but not very liked by anyone on the team, actually she is not very liked by anyone on the whole school, but that is fine with her. In her head she does not need any friends. In her head she is Ugly Girl, Warrior Woman (p. 236 l. last line) at least sometimes. It is like she has two different personalities: When she is being sensitive and sometimes caring she is Ursula Riggs (chapter 42 where Pumpkin has been taken (except the last line)), and when she is being selfish, ignoring and a fighter, she is Ugly Girl (chapter 2, the basketball game against Tarrytown).
Matt Donaghy is a popular boy, with a great talent in writing and joking.
