Downloading music illegally is quite a common practice among most people. It has become way too easy to download pirated content from the internet, and most people are not aware of the consequences that might follow.
This is a huge problem for the music -and film industry. They get paid when people buy their content, or by paid services such as Netflix and Spotify. So, when people download pirated content, these industries suffer from it. We need to remember, that they, just as any other business, need profit in order for them to keep producing content. If we someday end up with everyone downloading pirated content online, these businesses might stop turning a profit. This could end up lowering their production costs, which could compromise quality, or maybe even stop their production all together. This is something that would hurt us as consumers.
With this in mind, some companies have created ad-based video-sharing services. YouTube, Spotify and ViaFree are just three of the many sites, where creators get paid from ads. This solution solves the problem to an extent but is not perfect. Users can equip their browsers with adblockers, which allows them to skip/remove ads completely from almost any site. In 2016, 24% of all internet users in Denmark had an adblocker installed. This basically means that one fourth of all ads don’t generate any money for the creators.
