My name is --- and as you, I am a student here at the University of London. Today I will be giving a speech on illegal immigration in the United States of America. My topic will be divided in three parts: Illegal immigration in the US, Barack Obama’s presidency and Donald Trump’s presidency.
Illegal immigration in the US:
For those in doubt about the definition of illegal immigrants: An illegal immigrant is a person without a legal right to live in the country they’re currently staying in. It is a person who when migrating into a country violate the immigration laws of that country.
In 2017, 10,5 million immigrants were living in the United States of America, illegally, which in that year formed 3,2% of the population in the country, under the leadership of the current president Donald Trump. In 2004, the number of illegal immigrants living in the US peaked at 4% of the population being undocumented. This was the year George W. Bush was elected president.
I would like to tell you a short story about a woman known as Julissa Arce. Julissa, originally from Mexico, came to America legally to live with her parents at the age 11, however in the age of 14 her visa expired, and she became an undocumented immigrant. At the time she was a student at a Catholic school, and luckily for her a newly enacted law allowed her to stay and finish her education. In the meantime, her parents were deported back to Mexico, and she was forced to work in order to pay for college. Julissa Arce ended up becoming an intern at Goldman Sachs and was one year later offered a full-time position. She eventually ended up becoming both Vice-president of Goldman Sachs and a US-citizen, and today she is campaigning for undocumented immigrants. She got lucky. Even though her parents were deported, she fought her way to an American citizenship. Her story is a statement: It takes work, pain and suffering to become a US-citizen, however she found it all worthwhile and achieved success, not to mention respect worldwide.
