Analytical Essay of Charlotte Bondy s Renaude

The world of a young person’s mind has always been notorious for being curious about their own sexuality. The maturity and moulding experiences which occurs in the notorious teenageyears make some question their sexual orientation. The question of sexual orientation has become a modern issue of conflict and debate. Popular scholarship deems gender as a social construction and believes sexuality is influenced by the political and cultural circumstances of a person’s upbringing. The subject of “youth and sexuality” is exactly the main theme of Charlotte Bondy’s “Renaude”. Charlotte Bondy, the writer, uses the fictional characters of the story to stress the theme of “youth and sexuality”. Charlotte Bondy divides her short story in three overall parts, in which they are home-abroadhome: the part of where Carla meets Misha and bonds with him, the part of when Misha and Carla is introduced to Renaude and the part where Misha and Carla is back again in safety, in which Renaude was left back for as her own choice. The first part of Clara meeting Misha and bonding gives the reader an insight of how strong their relations is as they continually grow in experience and therefore gives makes this part where Clara is home. The second part of Misha and Clara meeting the antagonist Renaude is where Clara is mentally challenged as she is shown to be in love with Renaude’s erotic manner. This is the part where the protagonist Clara is abroad. The third part is where Clara is back home again in her comfort zone with Misha beside her. Nevertheless, it seems obvious that Clara is used to her everyday life testing out her teenage life. Among the elements portraying this, especially the narrative technique stands out. Charlotte Bondy uses a limited narrator and the narrative technique “stream of consciousness”. By doing this, the narrative is associated with the main character Clara, and the reader is therefore presented with her thoughts and feelings. An example of this is “I love the way she pronounces my name. Claw-ra, drawing it out like it’s something important and precious.” (p. 8, l. 17-18). Charlotte Bondy displays the teenage life of the 17-year-old first-person narrator Clara, who lives in Canada. Clara is the main protagonist of the short story and can be
