I choose this topic, because since we first began to talk about Nelson Mandela in school, I was fascinated by the way he fought for freedom and equal rights. he has shown me and the rest of the world never to give up, and that I admire him for.

Who was Nelson Mandela:

He was named Rolihlahla Mandela when he was born in a little village called Mzevo. Nelson Mandela was, as a young law student, anti-apartheid-activist. He was leader of a congress called ANC – African National Congress, they fought against the government’s refusal of politic, social, and economic rights to the black majority. Mandelas involvement in politics got him into trouble with the government. In 1962 he was jailed for five years, because he had left South Africa illegally. While in prison he was charged with sabotage and given a life sentence. After his release in 1990, people were so inspired by him, because of his braveness, and courage.

What was apartheid:

Apartheid is the name given to the system of a government that ruled South Africa from 1948 until 1994. People were legally classified as belonging to a particular racial group: White, Black, Indian or Coloured. The Whites were first class citizens, Indians second best, Coloured third, and the Blacks got the lowest status. The whites and non-whites lived in two worlds. It meant, there were two copies of everything, beaches, benches, cinemas, trains, school and so on. The whites had all the power in South Africa, they owned the gold and diamonds and almost all of the land. The police, the soldiers and the government were white too. Under Apartheid, the whites were allowed to stay in their homes. Everybody else lived in townships for only three days at a time. And wherever the non-whites went, they had to carry a pass that proved, what race they were, where they belonged and when they had to go back. If they didn’t have a pass, the whites could throw them into prison. Some also got killed.
