Most people like to make up scenarios in their heads, because it satisfies them in a strange way. The fact that the scenario is never going to happen in real life, but still happens in their imagination, can be an escape from reality.
In the short story “This Is All Mostly True” written by Kathy Stevens we witness how lack of attention can affect children’s mentality.
The main character, Elsie, is very intelligent for her age, which we can tell by paying attention to the words she uses. It is not so usual that a little girl know what words like “protagonist” and “alliteration” means, but Elsie does. This can be caused by her passion for writing and especially for the genre fiction. Besides writing she has a lot of chores that needs to be completed, which proves how responsible she is. She doesn’t only now formal words but also swear words that she hears from her parents. Her parents argue a lot when she is around and say stuff like:
“I drink because your father’s a cheating bastard.”
Your child is not the best person to tell this to, but in this short story this is all the parents do. Elsie even points out that they never say these things to each other, which concludes in her being the victim. During one of their argument Elsie looks out of the window and describes the surroundings:
