Kathy Durham’s opinion in her article is not easy to avoid. School shootings are a huge problem today, and it doesn’t seem like it’s changing. Kathy raises concern to the fact that it’s preventable easily. She mentions the fact that the school system doesn’t give enough funding to prevent these problems.
Before Columbine, a school-shooting was a mere joke, and it wouldn’t happen in your wildest fantasy. By now, school-shootings happen almost every single week. And mass shootings, every month. There simply isn’t even enough media-coverage on it. Not enough time.
The Sandy Hook School shooting affected the whole nation, and it has been one of the most horrifying mass shootings all across America, ever. The Sandy Hook prevention program made a video, that helps people understand the early signs, as well as the late signs of a school-shooter. In the foreground there is a story about a guy sitting in the library writing on a desk, which magically keeps replying. In the background, you see a guy performing different actions, like reading a gun-magazine, watching shooting videos on the internet, getting bullied, doing gun signs to teachers etc.
They also made another video about back-to-school essentials. It shows different students in every age, using a form of school-equipment as either a defence-tool or an escape-tool to avoid a school-shooter. It’s using the form of appeal Pathos to play on the watchers’ feelings and emotions. The things are not preventing the shooting but helping the students when it actually happens.
