The text ”Shade” is one out of twenty one essays in the book “21 writers explore what it means to be Black, Asian & minority ethnic in Britain today”. The essay is written by Salena Godden and deals with the struggles of being half-caste. She considers describing someone as half is degrading and she thinks that it makes a person feel like they are worth less or like they are only one half of a person. She also expresses how much she struggles with having to work much harder than some others to prove that she deserves to be successful. Godden wants to be acknowledged for her actions and her talents and not for the tokenism of her shade. However she finishes the essay off with accepting that all she can do is to keep on fighting and sailing her good ship, encouraging the readers to look past the shades of others.

At some point in our life we have probably all struggled with fitting in to a certain group or category and feeling like an outsider. Imagine feeling like this every time someone asks you about your ethnicity. It must be frustrating to have multiple ethnicities and being unable to give a specific answer as to what you actually identify as. In the essay “Shade” Salena Godden shares her personal experiences in relation to this theme and explains why she wants change. This assignment will be an analysis and interpretation of the essay, specifically focusing on the pages 181, 185, 194 and 197.
