Before the flood is a documentary directed by Fisher Stevens. It was released in 2016 and was shortlisted for Critics' Choice Documentary Award for Best Director and Documentary same year.

The documentary is about Leonardo DiCaprio and climate changes. He is travelling around the world to see the human-induced climate changes, and what we can do to provide against these.

In the beginning he is meeting with the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, to be welcomed as the new United Nations Messenger of Peace on climate changes, because he wants to make a change!

Leonardo discovers a lot of climate problems on his journey, but the biggest and most important problem is the use of fossil fuels.

The analysis:

The documentary shows many examples of forms of appeals: Ethos, Logos and Pathos.

Ethos deals with morality, belief and ethics, e.g. is Leonardo DiCaprio ethos. He is a very popular actor, we believe in him and the things he emphasizes, and it feels ethically right to listen and believe in him and his points. Ethos is also when they involve some sort of climate experts, e.g. Johan Rockström, the Swedish professor in environmental science.

It gives this faithful effect, which manipulates us to believe in them and take action, because who doesn’t believe in experts?
