Interview with newly freed slave Tyrone brown, it was the worst years of his life
The newly freed slave from Virginia Tyrone Brown who has been a slave for most of his life. He is 39 years old and before he became a slave he lived I Virginia. He got freed from slavery a month ago and we asked him if he would like to come to an interview with us and he said yes. His story is very dramatic and it was a good interview. Interviewer “how was it to be a slave?” Tyrone “it was really hard, we worked all day long, and if we didn’t do it good enough we would be punished. Interviewer “what was the punishment and how long did you work on a day?” Tyrone “one of the punishments was we were getting wiped on the bag, and it was hurting a lot and if you try to lay down after, it would hurt even more. Every day I was working 12 hours and it was really hard in the beginning but you have to do it if you wanted to survive.” When we asked him about the punishment we could see in his eyes that it was a big part of his life and he looked sad. Tyrone Brown worked with cotton and that was the only thing he was during in all of those horrible years. We then asked him about his family, he got a tear in his eyes and he looked really sad. He said his family was taken from him when he became a slave, and in all of those years, he hoped that they were okay. But when he was freed he found out that his wife and oldest son was dead. Fortunately, his two daughters were alive, his brother had taken care of them in all the years and they now were reunited again. Interviewer “how was your owner?” Tyrone “he was a rich man, about 40 years old and with wife and kids. But I have later talked with slaves from other owners and I think I was lucky. My owner never killed anybody and we all got a little bit of food and a bit of sleep. Other owners could be much worse, some have killed their slaves and tortured their slaves.” Tyrone looked forward to his new life as a free man but that period of his life would always be with him.
