A school shooting is short told when an attack with a deadly weapon happens at an educational institution, such as a university or a school. Unfortunately, this is something that happens pretty often in the US. Already 5 months in the year of 2018 there had been 16 shootings, resulting in death or serious injuries. So, in average that is about 1 school shooting weekly! Three of these attacks took place in Santa Fe, and two of them were even in the same week.
Even though America is a very large country, it is still a very concerning and scary number of deadly incidents, and the numbers are only counting…
How come that these incidents keep happening over and over again, and still nothing has changed?
In the year of 1996 Australia changed their gun laws, after the mass shooting at Port Arthur were about 35 people died. After the incident they changed the gun laws, and there hasn’t been an attack since.
The school shooting that we consider the first, was at Grover Cleveland Elementary School in San Diego. The person responsible was Brenda Ann Spencer, it took place in 1979. She killed two persons and hurt 9. She lived just across the school, so one morning she decided to aim and shoot from her window. When the police asked her why she fired those shots, Brenda simply answered “I don’t like Mondays: this livens up the day”. Brenda lived with her dad, and there had been suspicions about him abusing Brenda.
