Analyse af Ahondrias novelle 'Tom Corridan'

You would expect that in modern times like today in 2019, that any shape or form of abuse would be illegal in most countries. That is not the case, most countries allow it, and many laws, can defend the use of corporal punishment on children an make it seem reasonable. In This short story “Tom Corridan” written by Ahondria, awareness is spread of the issue surrounding, the connection between the lower social class, the resources they have, and most of and child abuse. The story is told in first person, by protagonist Tom Corridan. Tom goes to school and is hoping to be able to get a higher education, but his father is an alcoholic whose against the whose against the idea.

From the very beginning of story, it is made clear that the story is set in Ireland, Dublin. We know that by the distinct references to the Irish culture, names and slang. For instance, when the narrator uses slang like “shite” “are” “bastard”, or the most distinct word Eejits” which is an Irish slang word for “idiot”. By the hint that are given like that Trevor is using a “record player” (l.3 p.1)we are made aware that the story is set in a different time, so be more precise 1973, that we know by the song, Trevor is listening to on the record player “Thin Lizzy, Whiskey in the Jar’’ which was a hit in Ireland at the time, he also wanted bell-bottom pants, which indicates the time of the story. He uses a lot of slang, and curse word, which makes the text more personal, and makes the reader more able to connect with the protagonist. The language is very colloquial, and it appears that the people are from a lower-class range, in the sense, that people from an upper class tends to speak in a posher fashion.
