Social heritage, and not being able to get an education because of being in the lower class, are some of the issues that appear in the short story ‘’Tom Corridan’’ by Arhondia that was published in 2018. In the story, we hear about how it is to live in the lower class, where you have to put up with an alcoholic and unsupportive father, and how hard it is, to break the social heritage.
The story takes place in Ireland in Dublin, this can already be identified in the beginning of the story where Irish names, slang words and phrases are used, for an example the boy Tom Corridan uses the phrases ‘’ma’’ and ‘’da’’ instead of mom and dad, which is a characteristic the Irish people use. Some of the details in the story, indicate that it takes place around 1973. For example, the record player, which was a machine they used back in time to play music on. Another example is in the beginning of the text, where Tom was listening to Thin Lizzy’s version of the song ‘’Whiskey in the Jar’’ which was a major hit in 1973. The story extends over two days and takes place in several locations as their home, the local pub and Tom’s school.
