The short story “Tom Corridon” is written by Arhondia in 2018. The text was published in volume 15 of the anthology the mechanics institute review. The short story focuses on the deep influence psychical and emotional abuse can have on a child and draws attention towards the various factors that plays a part in the process. Arhondia addresses themes such as moral and power relations.

The setting in the story is especially focused on the life among the lower social classes. The text shows that the Corridon family is a working class family. Toms father Frank is a plumber and probably the main provider in the family of 4. His mother Nell appears to be a stay at home mom, who is taking care of the household chores. It appears that their economy it not very well, by the fact that Frank wants Tom to work to provide for the family, instead of him going off to college “’don’t be getting any ideas that you will be going to college. You will finish school and then you will help put bread on the table. You will work. There will be no stuffing your nose in a book.’” (p. 2 ll. 67-68). This is a very common feature among the lower social classes, because they are unstable financially. They don’t encourage their kids to go to university, where they would get the abilities to get a higher paid job. Or even if they want their kids to go to college, many parents don’t have a high enough income and they find themselves in a tense situation, where their only option is to make their children take a job right away.
