Hector Tobar has written an article called “Why latino children are scared of Donald Trump” (2015). In the text it seems like, he is using some tricks, to affect the reader, and to trick the reader into thinking, that Donald Trump is a bad and evil man. I have analyzed the text and pointed out some quotes in the text, where he might be using these tricks.
Tobar uses pathos in this text. He uses exaggerated words, to describe Donald Trump, and how the kids feel about him. It made Hugo “sad” to hear someone call his parents ugly, he said. And If he could meet Mr. Trump, he´d tell him, “Bad luck for you”. You can see how he tries to make the reader feel bad for the kid, when he describes how Hugo feels about the way Donald Trump talks about his parents. He knows that most people care about kids, and how they feel. Kids are a vulnerable subject and he uses that, to affect the reader into thinking that Donald Trump, is a bad man.
As said, Tobar uses exaggerated words to describe Donald Trump. He is negative about Trump, and it seems like he thinks, that Trump is unhealthy for the Latino Children. “Now we can add a new boogeyman to the repertoire of scary Latino bedtime stories. His name is The Donald.” Describing Donald Trump as a boogeyman, and comparing him, to monsters and ghosts, he puts Donald Trump into bad lights. Pathos is again in play, and again it seems like he is trying to make the reader, think bad of Donald Trump, this time calling him a “boogeyman”. He does not directly say that he doesn´t like Donald Trump, but when he is writing so many things, about how Donald Trump makes the latino children feel bad, it kind of seem like he doesn’t like Donald Trump either.
