“Crossing” is told by a 3rd person narrator, trough the father’s perspective. The story is thus seen from his point of view, and therefore we only know about his feelings and thoughts. The father is also the main character. We don't know much about the other characters besides what the father describes. The only characters we meet are the father and the son. We hear about the mother and the main character’s father, but they do not appear in the narrative. This makes the short story special and it is hard to get a feeling for the character's interior. Most of it is interpreted by their external descriptions and their actions. The way this story is constructed is therefore essential to the term.
