It is often hard to get out of an addiction, or a lifestyle you have gotten very used to, but in the movie “Wild” by Jean-Marc Vallée from 2014, the protagonist Cheryl Strayed manages to get out of an addiction by hiking down the PCT. The movie “Wild” is a remediation of the book “Wild” written by Cheryl Strayed. This essay focuses on the main character Cheryl Strayed, the meaning of the songs and the main theme.

The addiction Cheryl had was the reason she went on the long hike. You get flashbacks all through the movie about what Cheryl’s life looked like before the hike and before her mother died. She went to school, as did her mother on the same school. Cheryl was thriving and doing well. She wore nice clothes, was doing good in school and everything was good. For a while until her mother got diagnosed with a deadly disease. After her mother got diagnosed, everything went downhill slowly. She had to take care of everything. Her brother, the house because her mother couldn’t anymore, and she also had to take care of herself. Not because she didn’t take care of herself before her mother got sick, but she could always depend on her mother to be there. Then when her mother died, a little bit of Cheryl also died. Cheryl said multiple times through the movie that her mother was the center of her, and that her mother was the love of her life. So, when her mother, the love of her life died, the sorrow was too much to deal with, so she went into drugs and had sex with random people. Towards the ending of the movie you also get flashbacks of her father being abusive, and that may also have been a reason why she got into drugs. But then after four years she realized that if she kept damaging herself, she would ruin her life, and that was when she decided to walk back to the woman her mother raised her to be. Cheryl had a husband, but she was so damaged after her mother’s death that she cheated on him and could not really control it. He tried to be there for her, but in the end, it got too hard for him and they ended up getting a divorce. In the end of the movie she said that she was finally the woman her mother had raised her to be, and that it took her four years, seven months and three days to get there, but that she did not regret anything because what if it had taught her something and brought her to where she was now.
