Dead Man Walking is a movie about a nun named Sister Helen and a man named Matthew Poncelet. Matthew is convicted for murder, and a death row inmate. Sister Helen decides to try and help Matthew, because he tells her that he is innocent. Sister Helen reaches out to the government to get them to reconsider his punishment, but the request gets denied. When sister Helen realises that she cannot help him, she instead tries to guide him spirituality to prepare him for death. When the time comes for his execution, he feels ready, because of sister Helen's guidance. Matthew admits to killing the boy and raping the girl. In the execution room, Matthew says to the victim's parents that he is sorry, and that he does not expect their forgiveness. Matthew says, that he deserves to be punished, but not with the death penalty, because he thinks that it makes the executioners as bad as the murderess. After the execution, we see Sister Helen at his funeral.
Dead Man Walking is a powerful, thought-provoking film, that covers different perspectives of its topic. The movie causes the viewer to reflect upon the death penalty regardless of their opinion. It uses pathos, because it appeals to the viewers emotions. It especially happens when Matthew’s family is brought into the picture. Even though he has committed awful crimes, he still has a family who loves him.
