Discuss how parents should act if his/her child is in trouble.

Some parents will do anything to help their child if they have a problem, and some parents will simply give up on them. The short story “The Rescue” gives a good example of this. Part of the conflict in the text, is that the parents of a son, who has a drug addiction, have different ways of coping with their child’s problem. The father does everything to try and rescue their son, while the mother has given up on him.

On one hand most parents will almost always try and help their child if they are in trouble, but on the other hand it’s hard to help someone who doesn’t want to be helped. A parent’s desperate need to help a child can sometimes be damaging to their relation to everyone else in their life. However, watching your child go through tough times can be heartbreaking.

Some trouble, regarding a child, has to be handled in a very straight forward way, for instance if it’s trouble at school it should be handled through the adults and the school itself. But when a child grows older the troubles change, and it is not always easy for a parent to help. Sometimes parents have to sit back and wait for their child to ask for help, up until that point they would have to believe that their child is old enough to handle their problems on their own.
