As the years have gone by, people tend to use a lot of time on social media. Therefore, it can be a matter of course, that people spend many hours daily on social media. Whether or not there are consequences of spending much time using social media is an important topic to discuss. Cal Newport is a computer scientist who believes his life is better off without influence of social media and discuss in his speech: “Why you should quit social media”, how social media should not be necessary for people.

The topic of the speech by Cal Newport: “Why you should quit social media” was spoken in the program TED talk is to inform people about his opinion on how harmful social media is and why he believes people would have a happier and better life without influence from social media.

Cal Newport claims are that people are better off without social media and that social media is harmful and prevent people from being productive. His grounds for his claim on people being better off without social media includes his own personal life as an example “I am a millennial computer scientist book author standing on a TEDx stage, and yet, I´ve never had a social media account.”(lines 3-5) and “Social media use is not harmless, it can actually have a significant negative impact on your ability to thrive in the economy. I´m especially worried about this when we look at the younger generation, which is the most saturated in this technology. If you lose your ability to sustain concentration, you´re going to become less and less relevant to this economy.” (lines 79-82) Cal Newport explains how we lose our focus on what we are doing because of fear of missing out and a craving of seeing a sneak peek into people’s life. Cal Newport´s warrant on the topic is that researches show that “the more you use social media, the more likely you are to feel lonely or isolated.”(lines 84-85) And that the constant reminder of other people´s positive portrayals of their life can increase rates of depression and make people feel inadequate.
